BTC dominance gained 11%+ throughout March as the king continued to siphon liquidity from a large portion of the crypto ecosystem on its way to gaining 22%. ETH (+14%) and alts across the Arbitrum ecosystem were essentially the only tokens spared from the liquidity blackhole that is strong BTC led rallies.

March unfortunately saw the ongoing regulatory crackdown continue throughout the month with actions taken against:

Despite the regulatory backlash, the crypto ecosystem continued to do what it always does: build towards the future. March was broadly categorized as one of continued tech advancements and infrastructure improvements as we saw the launches of:

This month also highlighted the often forgotten fact that crypto rails continue to improve with each additional enhancement compounding throughout the entire ecosystem as the space prepares necessary infrastructure for the next eventual cycle. Looking ahead, I’ll mostly be monitoring the following sectors throughout April:

  • BTC dominance — currently at/approaching highs not seen since June of ‘21 & ‘22 at ~48%; will dominance top here allowing capital to spill to ETH & alts

  • LSDs — (LDO, RPL, FXS, SD, YFI) increased momentum & narrative ahead of Shapella upgrade April 12th enabling staked ETH withdrawals; expect narrative to rotate back to LSDs along with increased fees and TVL of staking protocols

  • Overhangs — YTD market hasn’t cared, but headwinds in April with Mt. Gox selling likely to begin, Shapella induced negligible selling, regulatory uncertainty including Coinbase & Binance and U.S. government’s year long TWAP selling (although minor @ ~$4M/day in BTC)

  • Rotations — they always manifest themselves, but fundamental and narrative driven rotations seem like a blank slate after LSDs boost from Shapella upgrade April 12th; thinking through what can develop late April through May +EV

  • L2s — Arbitrum TVL up 18.5% this month behind ARB airdrop but most ARB ecosystem tokens down since launch; how does distribution of TVL & users shift as Polygon & zkSync zkEVMs are live along with coming OP Bedrock upgrade

  • ATOM — can Replicated Security & ICS, recent SOL VM/asset integrations and coming native USDC provide strong enough tailwinds for user & TVL growth

  • ETH/BTC — approaching bottom of ~2 year range, expecting tailwinds to begin soon after successful Shapella upgrade then move towards range highs until momentum shifts back to BTC at start of ‘24 before April halving

  • Stablecoins — distribution and market share as USDT dominance climbs above 60%; USDC market cap down 23% this month, BUSD down another 28%, while TUSD continues to expand up 82% in March to $2B+

February’s main fundamental & narrative driven tokens; visualized on Messari

February was a chop filled month where if you were trading majors you were better off listening to cobie’s advice as BTC and ETH consolidated in tight ranges. The month was off to a rocky start as the second week of February brought Operation Coke Point 2.0 into the mainstream. Regulatory action was relentless from February 9th-13th with the main consequence being Paxos ordered to stop issuing Binance’s BUSD.

Fortunately it wasn’t all bad news as BLUR’s long-awaited token airdrop took place, stimulating the crypto and NFT ecosystem for a few weeks. Outside of BLUR, BTC Ordinals continued to gain traction and infuriate BTC maxis while Coinbase and Optimism ended the month on an exciting note with the launch of Base. As we head into March, uncertainty looms large as Silvergate faces increasing scrutiny, ETH FUD from Shanghai unlocks approaches, and heavy macro news awaits. I’m anticipating a choppy month where those who tread water and preserve capital are rewarded in April and beyond.

Looking ahead, I’ll mostly be monitoring the following events throughout March:

  • LSDs — (RPL, LDO, FXS, SD, YFI) continued momentum & narrative ahead of staked ETH unlocks around the first week of April; LDO v2 will be live by EoM

  • YFI — monitoring details on composition of YFI’s new yETH LSD basket along with the broad LSD marketshare and changes in its distribution

  • CHZ — validated genesis of block of new L1 Feb. 8th, announced $50M incubator program March 1st, & expected to launch fully functional PoS L1 sometime in March

  • L2s — continued momentum of the entire sector behind Arbitrum’s burgeoning DeFi sector (pls god launch ARBI), MATIC’s zkEVM launch March 27th, OP’s Bedrock upgrade March 16th & Base/Superchain onboarding/dapp development

  • FIL — will launch smart contract functionality and Filecoin Virtual Machine on March 14th effectively transitioning the protocol into an L1

  • Volatility — expecting markets to remain choppy and largely void of liquidity/vol until macro heavy (CPI, FOMC, etc.) week of the 13th leading into the expected FUD around Shanghai withdrawals — tread water/survive March, up in April?

January’s main fundamental & narrative driven tokens; visualized on Messari

January was an incredible month throughout the crypto ecosystem as those willing to buy the FTX-induced lows were rewarded. Shorts were continuously annihilated and hunted by the cartel, specifically on Friday the 13th as ~$500M worth of liquidations fueled BTC, and the market broadly, from 17k to 21k.

Throughout the month, CANTO and APT lead the way, with liquid staking derivatives (LSDs) and SOL’s recovery following closely. One of the key changes in January was the shift in the market’s reaction to news. I wrote more in depth on this change in last week’s edition of Round Tripping, with the abbreviated conclusion being bad news has been minimally impactful at most while the good news has lead to strong, sustained rallies (see AVAX x AWS, GALA tokenomics, unlocks over (MAGIC), ).

Looking ahead to next month, I’ll be monitoring the following throughout February:

  • CANTO — can the momentum behind CSR & the burgeoning NFT eco sustain

  • SUDO & BLUR — downstream impacts on XMON, LOOKS, & X2Y2 as the NFT token narrative develops; also likely BLUR provides stimulus to NFT ecosystem

  • Berachain — recent rally in the NFTs but is the chain real? testnet thooooonnnnn?

  • ETH supply — on-chain activity leading ETH to deflation & accelerating flywheel

  • bridges — Circle’s launch of CCTP & it’s affects on bridging protocols/liquidity; any updates on SYN and the coming SYN chain as it’s been recent radio silence

  • LSDs — (RPL, LDO, FXS, SD) continued momentum & narrative ahead of staked ETH unlocks in March; monitoring growth/distribution of LSD market share as percent of ETH staked sits @ 13.5%, typically PoS chains see 40-60% staked

October’s main fundamental & narrative driven tokens; visualized on Messari

While BTC remained a 20k stablecoin throughout October, activity within the crypto markets returned to moderate levels aided by a strong final week to close the month. ETH reached monthly highs of ~1650 while alts throughout virtually every crypto sector returned 20%+ to close October. As a wrote in last week’s Round Tripping, DOGE has become the

Once again, and until proven otherwise, macro remains in control of flows to the majors, suppressing any potential sustained momentum. Fortunately, there are a few factors positively impacting activity throughout the space. First, the “hot ball of money” appears to have returned to rotation, albeit now it’s barely lukewarm. Regardless, BTC & ETH remaining endlessly rangebound has provided a window for alts to appreciate on both fundamental & narrative driven catalysts.

Alts, NFTs, and memecoins being somewhat alive, for now, has led to ETH’s supply reduction through on-chain activity garnering more traction, a trend that will create massive reflexivity whenever next cycle begins. As you can see on ultrasound.money, ETH’s supply growth was -0.1% throughout October while ETH/BTC gained ~15% the closing week of the month. Looking ahead to next month, I’ll be mostly monitoring the following developments throughout November:

  • Macro — FOMC on the 2nd, mid-term elections the 8th, & CPI the 10th

  • Ongoing CANTO momentum & Synapse (SYN) integration for easier bridging

September’s main fundamental & narrative driven tokens visualized on Messari

Heading into September, there were a long list of expected developments to take place across the crypto ecosystem that I previously outlined several times. Below are the updates that have occurred with the obvious highlights being ETH’s successful transition to PoS along with tokenomics revamps/confirmations from LINK, ATOM, & XMON (SUDO).

Broadly speaking, crypto displayed some surprising relative strength throughout September as macro markets continued puking into Friday’s Q3 close. The first two trading days of Q4 have resulted in the S&P (+5.55%) and Nasdaq (+5.38%) rallying, giving hope to macro playing nice this month leading to a profitable Uptober where I’ll be mostly monitoring the following developments:

  • Backpack & xNFTs development on SOL after recent launch of beta version

  • FOLD, flashbots MEV-boost, and developments around censored transactions

  • ATOM 2.0 proposal rollout & its bid ahead of Interchain Security launch (Q1)

  • Berachain’s launch of upcoming testnet as new, Cosmos SDK crypto native L1

  • Potential divergence & strength of SOL/ETH and ETH/BTC as broad indicators

  • y00ts reveal (hopefully) and the ongoing strength in volume/users of SOL NFTs

  • Further updates regarding stablecoins from AAVE, CRV, and DPX

August’s main fundamental & narrative driven tokens

Heading into August, all eyes were on the upcoming, and final, ETH testnet Goerli merge. Fortunately, the simulated merge was successful and ETH’s long awaited transition to PoS has since been scheduled sometime on or around September 15th. Unfortunately, ETH’s upcoming merge was overshadowed by two separate federal actions in the form of sanctions and interest rate policies. Sanctions from the U.S. Treasury’s OFAC were levied against Tornado Cash and numerous associated ETH addresses while the FED reiterated its commitment to fighting inflation through decreasing demand and asset prices by raising rates. After a sharp July rally off the bottom, BTC (-15%), ETH (-5.5%), SOL (-26%) and countless tokens across the ecosystem declined throughout August as the market continually digests decreasing liquidity, increased regulatory oversight, equity selloffs and macro uncertainty.

While macro uncertainty hovers affecting the broad crypto market, several sectors remained unfazed through a combination of fundamental and narrative tailwinds that were led by ATOM (+20%) and the corresponding Cosmos ecosystem, CHZ (+51%) and associated fan tokens, XMON (+16%) adding liquidity and semi-fungibility to what is left of NFT volume, and DPX (+76%), GMX (+21%), and MAGIC (+60%) leading the ongoing real yield and L2 rotation as Arbitrum launches their Nitro upgrade and prepares to reignite the Arbitrum Odyssey.

Looking ahead, September appears to be an extremely volatile and active month across the ecosystem. The obvious elephant in the room is ETH’s merge and the downstream effects of its success on various sectors specifically L2s and DeFi. Crypto’s correlation to macro isn’t changing anytime soon, and the main macro events in September include new CPI numbers (Sept. 13th) and the next FOMC meeting (Sept. 20th). Beyond macro, the crypto ecosystem has numerous upcoming catalysts that market participants should be aware of including:

  • The merge (~Sept. 15th), CPI data (Sept. 13th), & FOMC (Sept. 20th)

  • ATOM’s continued relative strength ahead of upcoming Cosmoverse conference (Sept. 26-28) and developments of ATOM 2.0 including tokenomics upgrades & launch of Interchain Security

  • Potential XMON and sudo token distribution/tokenomics information as sudoswap continues eating into OpenSea’s dominance

  • The ongoing bid for “real-yield” narrative tokens including GMX, DPX, BTRFLY, SNX, etc. along with RWA developments and adoption from MKR

  • Protocol upgrades including FXS’s Fraxlend and liquid staking solution frxETH, YFI’s rollout of v3, and BTRFLY’s pirex, hidden hand, and v2 adoption

  • Merge related tokens including LDO, RPL, and FOLD

  • L2s — Arbitrum’s rollout of Nitro and likely resumption of Arbitrum Odyssey and the downstream effects to the broad Arbitrum ecosystem including information on ARBI token

After a brutal few months of asset prices, strong recoveries occurred across the investing landscape. Correlations between BTC/ETH and the S&P/QQQ remain near all time highs, and the crypto markets were led by strong months from ETH (+57%) and the Nasdaq (+12.5%). BTC also rallied (+21%) and combined with ETH’s strength to reignite risk across the broad crypto landscape.

Risk-on was further evidenced throughout July as sector wide rallies were spurred by both narrative and fundamental developments which is a good sign for market participants tolerance for risk. DeFi was the best performing sector this month as AAVE (+76%) and CRV (+80%) stablecoin announcements, LDO’s (+394%) proximity to the merge through stETH, and protocol developments from YFI (+115%) and MKR (+21%) propelled the sector upwards. Other top performing monthly tokens showcasing rotations and risk returning included XMON rallying (+477%) on the release of sudoswap, Optimism’s (OP, +209%) resurgence, Synapse (SYN, +157%) v2 and Synapse Chain announced, and Polygon’s MATIC (+100%) as a result of their zkEVM and other narrative related announcements.

As we enter August, ideally the relative risk-on environment continues but all focus, and that outcome, shifts to ETH’s strength ahead of the merge. The final testnet, Goerli, merge is scheduled to take place between August 6th-12th and if everything proceeds smoothly, the merge is tentatively scheduled for September 19th. 3AC, GBTC & LUNA:

Leverage, risk management, and the above three entities combined to result in BTC registering one of its worst months ever. BTC closed the month down ~39.5% while ETH fell another 46% in June. Retracing our steps leads us back to LUNA’s collapse, the cascading pressure that applied to 3AC and finally the lenders that enabled them.

3AC was invested deep throughout the LUNA ecosystem through executing the once popular “UST carry trade” and previously deploying $200M+ to LUNA tokens in the LFG’s most recent funding round back in February. Obviously, the tokens became essentially worthless and the heavily performed carry trade resulting in “free” double-digit yields evaporated. 3AC was battered, but alive. Large, levered and relatively illiquid positions are the last place to be in a liquidity crunch, and 3AC’s positions in GBTC, stETH, and various other vesting/venture bets lead to their demise as the LUNA fallout sent any potential collateral they could post spiraling.

Voyager Digital, Celsius, Blockfi and Babel emerged this month as troubled lenders caught up in the story 3AC sold. While many of the involved parties have remained silent, details have trickled out as billions vanished. Voyager was one of the worst hit as they somehow lent an unsecured 15,250 BTC and $350M worth of USDC to 3AC that remains unaccounted for. Voyager has since issued a notice of default and regulators in the British Virgin Islands have appointed advisory firm Teneo to handle 3AC’s liquidation process.

BlockFi and Celsius continue to freeze customer withdraws and have looked to FTX for rescue. Celsius unfortunately has had their potential lifeline from FTX withdrawn as FTX’s look into their financials revealed a glaring $2B hole in its balance sheet. BlockFi on the other hand, was rumored to be purchased by FTX for $275M until BlockFi’s CEO declared the information false on Twitter.

While potentially critically wounded lenders (and our tokens) lick their wounds, FTX continues to pick up the broken pieces and adding to their empire. Fortunately, the execution of DeFi protocols such as MKR, UNI, AAVE, and COMP once again operated as they were designed and coded in the face of extreme market conditions while always displaying out standing debt and allowing users to withdraw as they wished.

Wallets — Data was/is the gold mine of web2 and wallets give access to potential products and marketing based on user’s preferences expressed through token holdings in web3. Everyone wants a wallet, and this month saw announcements from Coinbase, Braavos, Robinhood, Zerion, Ledger, and Meta joining Argent, Context, Cogni, Venly, Spruce, Privy and the established market leading wallets in the race to capture users’ entry point to web3. Expect continued experimentation here.

NFTs & GameFi — As I continually noted in Round Tripping, NFTs and GameFi are low risk bets that provide the highest potential return in the current market environment. While the sector doesn’t operate independently from BTC and ETH, there are routinely (sometimes short term) winners like we’ve seen with goblintown. Venture seems to agree as large NFT/GameFi funds and infrastructure investments along with small bets (14 between 10-25M this month) are increasingly directed to the sector.

Sentiment — May, headlined by LUNA/UST’s collapse, was a difficult month for our beloved tokens. MoM returns of BTC -22%, ETH -37%, DeFi TVL ~50%, NFT activity and virtually every other metric continue on a downward trajectory as risk assets are repriced. Fortunately, the cyclical nature of crypto has been well established, something you can read further about in my post from last week Cyclicality & What’s Next. While the pain may last in the short to mid term, there are numerous catalysts awaiting throughout Q3 potentially reigniting markets through EoY.

  • Infrastructure investment is an attractive vertical no matter the industry, and it’s been one of the hottest funding sectors within the crypto industry over the past 6+ months. Roughly $278M was deployed to scaling, staking, data, and analytics this month. What’s new this month is the number of infrastructure adjacent investments into the wallet sector. Everyone knows MetaMask, but there’s a broad belief between investors and buildooorrss that wallets can be infinitely more (something I wrote about in depth here) than what we have now.

  • Abstracting away the complexity of integrating with blockchains while simultaneously providing users to a multi-chain world is one of the most exciting, necessary innovations needed within the space. Companies raising in April approaching this problem totaled 9 and spanned wallet security, messaging, consistent log-in, data security/portability, and social platform wallet integration.

Token Developments

  • As noted extensively throughout previous Round Trippings, APE and GMT continue to outperform while the rest of the market was down only throughout the month of April. Down, ranging markets don’t stop the devs though as there’s been the usual flurry of coin developments.

  • LOOKS — announced listing rewards for collections that are in the top 25 of 24 hour rolling volume and are priced within 1.5x the global floor price. LOOKS continues innovating and eating into OpenSea’s monopoly.

  • FXS — Frax had a busy month with the release of their CPI adjusted stablecoin $FPI and its governance token $FPIS which you can read more about here. Additionally, Frax founder Sam Kazemian alluded to the protocol buying large amounts of crypto to back the stablecoin. FXS also entered the stablecoin wars this month through their alliance with LUNA & BTRFLY

  • BAL — launched veBAL, tokenomics revamp, and potential Aura Finance collab

  • Optimism Token — announces the Optimism Collective and their token plans

  • Bastion token is now live along with a thread of what they offer to NEAR

L2 szn & The Merge

  • One of the core themes of March was the increasing excitement surrounding the Ethereum merge (currently slated for late June) and the accompanying developments of L2s. The majority of the recent reinvigoration of L2s has come from the vast amount of funding and development progress of ZK specific L2s. I cover ZK rollups in depth in the zero knowledge landscape.

    • StarkWare (building StarkNet & StarkEx), zkSync, IMX, Polygon, Espresso Systems, Aztec, and Aleo were covered in the ZK landscape

  • Mina Protocol ($MINA, ZK L2 scaling) announced a $92M funding round the day after I published the ZK landscape, and went on to be one of the best performing assets of March. The final notable L2 announcement in March also came on the 17th when Optimism announced a $150M raise pushing their valuation to $1.65B.

Covered extensively in previous roundups, we’ll recap highlighting Axie’s Ronin losing ~$625M last week, Poly Network losing $600M in August of ‘21 and Wormhole losing $325M in February (which was backstopped by Jump) reignited the conversation around the security and viability of bridges moving forward. Throw in recent cross chain developments by $RUNE, the Cosmos IBC communication layer, and the launch of $STG which claims to solve the “Bridging Trilemma“ and we have a lot to sort through moving forward.

  • While the bridge wars sort themselves out, it’s clear participants want cross chain applications and yield opportunities. While many claimed the demise of bridges this week, Synapse ($SYN, bridging protocol) highlighted exactly why that is not the case displayed in the demand/use of their bridging services as DFK transitioned to an AVAX subnet and users bridged ~$500M over night. on the back of Stargate’s launch, AVAX subnets connecting JEWEL while partnering with SYN to bridge ~$470M in assets, and RUNE deployed synthetics and boasted ThorSwap.

Continued Product Innovation

  • Notable tokenomics revamps along with new versions released, continued product innovation, and cross chain expansion corresponded to some of the largest token returns in March. Projects encompassing that w/ 30d returns:

  • LOOKS continues shipping product updates & finding PmF +75%

  • RUNE launched synthetics and outlined the future of ThorFi/ThorSwap +130%

  • ZCASH (and privacy coins) received a boost as the importance of privacy enabled transactions resurfaced +55%

  • GMT tapped new ponzinomics in pioneering move to earn +1000%

  • MINA raised funding and was one of the liquid tokens available to bet on the growth of ZKRs +85%

tl;dr: another insane month where we witnessed: the insane 2016 Bitfinex hack couple, OpenSea phishing exploit that was initially thought to be a free-for-all hack, Coinbase Pro trading bug that *could’ve* allowed massive BTC selling, Pixelmon released the worst NFTs imaginable creating an unlikely crypto meme hero Kevin, the infamous 2016 DAO hack causing the ETH fork creating ETC perpetrator is *allegedly named, and to top it all off Russia invaded Ukraine. Yet still our coins (mostly) are up from where they stood last month, (good) NFTs are still minting, and secondary NFT volume is remains healthy. crypto is fucking beautiful.

    • Looks Rare, Immutable X, and Ribbon were all the talk of crypto twitter for brief (or long in LOOKS case) periods throughout February and yet still become some of February’s biggest losers. LOOKS attempted a vampire attack on OpenSea users to no avail (so far), IMX announced a partnership and fund with GameStop (who proceeded to dump the tokens) and RBN has been long admired and anticipated by DeFi aficionados who are unaware of @DegenSpartan’s DeFi monthly bear market progression tracker (17 more to go!).

Despite volatility and geopolitical mayhem, February was a pretty good month for NFTs. Sometimes it didn’t feel like it, but the volume says otherwise - February ‘21 OpenSea volume clocked in around $3.5B, making it the second-highest volume month to date. Some highlights below.

News and Notes:

  • Azuki settled in after a record-setting first few weeks. The collection sits at #8 on OpenSea’s all-time volume rankings with 123,000e traded.

  • CryptoPunk 5822 was sold for 8,000e, nearly double the previous all-time high.

    • V1 CryptoPunks were rediscovered and quickly sued.

  • Kaiju Kingz expanded their universe with Failed Experiments and Mutants.

  • Mfers went ballistic. The floor rose nearly as quickly as the number of derivatives. CC0 FTW.

  • NFT Worlds have proven you need nothing more than Minecraft to make the Metaverse.

  • RTKFT continues to spoil their holders, delivering a MNLTH and a Space Pod to all Clones.

  • Wassies for Wassies, the collection formerly known as Loomlock, debuted their long-awaited roadmap which is heavily focused on the community.

New Mints:

  • Cool Pets struggled to get their mint off the ground, but got it done. The Cool Cat universe is ready to expand.

  • Edenhorde, a story-centric collection supported by Merit Circle, wants holders to play a pivotal role in the development of their universe.

  • Invisible Friends minted after months of hype-building. The highly-anticipated collection debuted upwards of 12e before settling down after reveal.

  • Karafuru picked up the torch that Phanta Bear dropped and created some hype for Asian NFTs.

  • Pixelmon turned into the biggest fiasco of the month, nuking from its 3e sale price and giving birth to Kevin, the world’s finest meme.

  • RaidParty minted at the beginning of the month and have been working to push out their game. Holders wait.

  • Tubby Cats premiered and got spammed all over CryptoTwitter (and will be for the rest of eternity).
